BB/BMB Undergraduate Advising

Fostering faculty-student connections

We use a team approach to advising, meaning BB and BMB students will work with all members of the advising team over the course of their undergraduate career on a rotation basis rather than being assigned to just one advisor. We try to be as accessible as possible to students. All members of the BB/BMB advising team are teaching faculty who have earned Ph.D.s in biochemistry and conducted research in the molecular life sciences which enables us to work with our students in different settings.

Choose the right advising session

During the academic year Fall-Winter-Spring terms there are two types of advising available to current BB and BMB students: drop-in (Virtual by Zoom) and 30-minute appointments (in person with virtual upon request). During the Summer term, we host virtual drop-in hours by zoom. New first year and transfer students book special START advising appointments through the START module.

BB/BMB advising is available by zoom drop-ins

Mondays 2-3 pm (Dr. Shay)
Tuesdays 1-2 pm but not October 8th (Dr. van Zee)
Thursdays 11-12 (Dr. Dalton)

Fall-Winter-Spring: Drop-in advising is for quick (max 5 minutes) questions only. If you need more assistance, please schedule an appointment. Advisors will not distribute PINs during drop-in advising. Join us on Zoom during our drop-in hours and when your advisor is ready, they will admit you to the meeting. Wait times may be up to 10 minutes.

Fall Term Advising 2024

Please book on the appropriate calendar based on the chemistry series you are currently in. First Years at OSU must meet every term fall-winter-spring. Second Years in organic chemistry meet fall (A-L) or winter (M-Z); all must meet in spring. Third Years in biochemistry chemistry meet fall (A-L) or winter (M-Z); all must meet in spring. Seniors book on first year calendar especially weeks 1-3 and 10-finals, use drop-ins, email Kari.van.zee@oregonstate.edu. Save peak advising for first years during weeks 4-9.

First Year/Gen Chem A-Z meet with Kari van Zee 
Second Year/Organic Chem- series meet with Kate Shay, A-L Fall and M-Z winter 
Third Year/Biochem series meet with Lauren Dalton, A-L Fall and M-Z winter

Registration and override help form

This form will walk you through the process of obtaining an override for Biochemistry & Biophysics courses (BB XXX). Please complete the entire form. You will receive an email from the BB Staff when the override is in place or if additional information is required. We can only issue overrides for BB courses for the upcoming or current term (not BI, MB BHS or CH--reach out to their departments).

Research and independent study for credit

Undergraduate students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of independent study credits with BB faculty members. Students need to obtain faculty permission and then a departmental override to register for these credit opportunities: research (BB 401), thesis (BB 403) reading and conference (BB 405) and internship credits (BB 410).

BB undergrad listserv
