The College of Science congratulates its students and Dean Roy Haggerty for being inducted into the Oregon State University chapter of Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi! A hearty congratulations as well to biochemistry and biophysics students Brian Josephson and Delaney Smith, who each received Phi Kappa Phi scholarships. A total of 13 science students were initiated into the prestigious honor society at its recent annual award ceremony on campus.
Phi Kappa Phi is a national interdisciplinary honor society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship across all academic disciplines. OSU's Phi Kappa Phi chapter was chartered in 1924 and welcomes about 200 new students each year.
Brian Josephson, a biochemistry and biophysics major who graduated last spring, received a 2018 Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship award. Josephson is continuing his education by pursuing a Ph.D. in chemical biology at the University of Oxford in England. Among his accomplishments at OSU, he worked in a genetics lab for three years, studied abroad for a semester at the University of Western Australia, presided on the executive board of his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and served as Student Vice President of Phi Kappa Phi for two years. In his undergraduate research, Josephson worked on deciphering the methods in which cells express and silence certain parts of their genome in response to the environment. He is incredibly thankful to OSU, the organizations and professors that fostered his interests and gave him an opportunity to be successful.
Delaney Smith, a biochemistry and biophysics major with a double major in education, received a 2018 Phi Kappa Phi Tunison Scholarship. She hopes to pursue a career in biomedical research and practice clinical medicine. Smith is interested in developing interactive teaching tools for students struggling to master difficult concepts. Currently an undergraduate researcher in Jeff Chang's laboratory in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, she enjoys photography, rock climbing and playing instrumental swing music in her spare time.
Congratulations to all of the College of Science students on their induction into Phi Kappa Phi, one of the most prestigious honor societies in the nation!
